Isn’t It Romantic

Was trying to watch Happy Death Day 2 U today but the theaters projector wasn’t working and this was the other film that I hadn’t seen that was playing then. Not going to lie, I dug the trailer for this film. Felt very similar to I Feel Pretty, with girl bumping head and waking up to differences. However, in this film its more so the lead remains grounded to all the changes going on around her. The film is predictable, not sure if it was meant to kind of follow the romantic comedy genre purposely. I did enjoy it more than I thought I would though.

The film is about an architect who is sick of the “fairy tale” like feeling and romanticizing of rom-coms. She doesn’t get the guy and does not have a fabulous job or life. However, one day after being mugged she bumps her head and wakes up in a world that is bright and vibrant and musical like. She gets noticed and is chased after by attractive men and has everything her heart could desire. She lives the life of a PG-13 romantic comedy. The film stars Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, and Liam Hemsworth.

The film is self aware of the genre tropes of films, especially in the genre that it is targeting. This awareness makes it a fun watch for me. Its nice to see New York City looking clean for a change and how life would be like if everyone were to just spontaneously break into dance and fall in love without batting an eyelash. I think the film works better than say, I Feel Pretty because of the lead being real in tune with the ridiculousness of what goes on around her.

The film is very predictable all the way through. Its nothing spectacular or anything you need to run out and see. It could be a nice little Valentines Day film for the couples. Admittedly, I’m not a gigantic fan of Rebel Wilson in films (think her character is the unfunniest part of the Pitch Perfect series) but she works for this film. Its a slightly charming, non problematic affair that is dare I say…beguiling.
